IVF in India: Cost, Stay and Clinic Selection
A patient-friendly guide to planning IVF travel, cycle duration, required tests and support services.
What an IVF journey abroad actually involves
An IVF cycle is a sequence with fixed biological timing — stimulation, monitoring, retrieval, fertilisation, then transfer. That sequence spans several weeks, which is the fact that most affects planning treatment in another country.
The question that determines your stay
Ask the fertility team directly: which parts of the cycle require me to be in India, and which can be monitored at home?
Some clinics can work with monitoring done locally in your own country during the early phase, with travel timed around retrieval and transfer. Others prefer you present throughout. The answer changes your stay length, your cost and your time away from work more than any other variable.
What to send before you travel
- Previous cycle records, including protocols used and how you responded
- Hormone profiles — AMH, FSH and others already done
- Semen analysis
- Imaging of the uterus and ovaries
- History of any miscarriage, surgery or related conditions
Fertility is one area where prior records genuinely change the proposed protocol, so send everything you have.
On success rates
No clinic can honestly promise a live birth, and you should be cautious with any that implies otherwise.
Published success figures are averages across a clinic's whole patient population, which may look nothing like your case. Age, diagnosis and ovarian reserve matter enormously. Ask the clinician what the realistic expectation is for someone in your specific situation — that answer is worth far more than a headline percentage.
Understanding the cost
IVF estimates usually cover a single cycle. Ask specifically about:
- Whether medication is included — protocols vary and drugs are a significant cost
- What happens if the cycle is cancelled before retrieval
- Freezing and storage of embryos, and annual storage fees
- The cost of a subsequent frozen transfer
- Additional procedures such as ICSI or genetic testing
Multiple cycles are common. Budget for that possibility rather than assuming one.
Legal position on donors and surrogacy
Donor and surrogacy arrangements in India are governed by law and are restrictive, particularly for foreign nationals.
Do not rely on informal advice, forum posts or an agent's assurance. Ask us to obtain the hospital's written position on what is permitted in your specific circumstances before you plan anything around it.
The part nobody schedules
IVF is emotionally demanding, and doing it away from home compounds that. Plan for a partner or family member to travel with you where possible, and be honest with the clinic about how you are coping. Good clinics take that seriously.
